VIVA MAGENTA: PANTONE’S COLOR OF THE YEAR

Source: WNYCStudios.org

Pantone has us thinking pink in 2023. Every year, the Pantone Color Institute chooses a color to represent the new year. The color represents culture and society, “the Pantone Color of the Year reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that color can hope to answer”, says Laurie Pressman, VP of the Pantone Color Institute.

It influences design and fashion. For example, Apple released a Classic Blue iPhone 12s at the end of 2020, months after Pantone announced it as Color of the Year. Of course, you can’t forget 2000’s iconic color Cerulean, whose relevance is mentioned in The Devil Wears Prada.

"An unconventional shade for an unconventional time," Pantone says. Viva Magenta is a bright, yet muted magenta; a pinky burgundy. The stunning shade is meant to empower and get us out of our comfort zones. This vivacious color is a love letter to nature. It may not be the first color you think of when you think "natural", but Viva Magenta occurs naturally in flowers and the cochineal beetle. Can't get enough of this color?
