IS SEX AND THE CITY INFLUENCING YOUR OOTDS?

Sex and The City was one of the most fabulous and trendy shows to run on TV. What they wore on screen around twenty years ago still has an impact today. Four New York City women navigate life in their thirties as they try to settle down and make the lives they want for themselves. The show covers everything from fashion to work-life balance. Besides the outrageous dialogue and relatable storylines, the show is most known for its main characters’ fashion and style.

The four women always styled head to toe in designer looks that were relatively ahead of their time. From Manolo Blahnik pumps to Hermes Birkin bags, every trendy accessory or fashionable piece of clothing that was popular when the show ran was featured in it. The four main characters became fashion icons for the six years it ran on TV. Sex and The City helped set trends for the late 1990s, early 2000s, and even now.

Just because women are in the workplace doesn't mean that they still can't make a fashion statement. Samantha Jones proved this to be true time and time again. Her colorful and boxy suits created the perfect mixture of professional and fashionable. Now, power suits are a staple for the everyday working woman. From Zara to Chanel, almost every women's brand sells some form of it.

Slip dresses were once seen as leisurewear and underwear and were sometimes taboo to wear out in public. Carrie Bradshaw helped break these notions by dressing the look up with designer heels and a patterned shawl. You can now find slip-dresses on red carpets worn by celebrities like Haily Bieber, Amber Heard, and Lilli Reinhart.

Carrie Bradshaw's nameplate necklace became a staple to her character. Supposedly bought at a random flea market, the necklace showed personalization and individuality that wasn't always available in fashion while the show was running. Today, you can get almost anything personalized for a bit of extra money.

Color-blocked Outfits

Colorblocked outfits have gone in and out of style over the years, but Samantha Jone's bold and color-coordinated outfits helped send the trend right back into style in the early 2000s. The trend has made its way onto the runway within the past few decades. Brands such as Balenciaga, Staud, Christian Siriano, and Coach have presented color-blocked looks in their recent collections.

Fur has been a controversial topic in fashion for quite a long time. With groups like PETA exposing the harmful tactics companies used to acquire the fabric, the fashion community became apprehensive to promote the use of fur. Despite this, the show continued to dress the four main characters in fur coats. As of recently, vintage fur is back in style and reactivating the conversation of the ethics and morals of wearing fur.

Even though Sex and The City has been wrapped for years, it still has a massive impact on fashion trends today. With so many of the iconic looks from the show becoming trends today, it is clear that the four main characters will always be fashion icons.
