HOW TO STYLE 2023’S NEWEST TREND: THE ONE-LEGGED PANT

It’s a new year which means new trends are taking the fashion industry by storm. This year’s trend: the one-legged pant. As seen on Rita Ora at the 2019 Soccer Aid fundraiser, this piece adds a daring look to your closet. Although it is labeled as a ‘bizarre’ fashion choice for many including Ora, despite the backlash it is surprisingly popular and sold out in most stores.

Designers like Maryam Nassir Zadeh and Zachariah Fairfax are pushing the boundaries of fashion when it comes to their concept of the one-legged pant. This piece can be styled as a skirt overlaying the one-legged pant or having a high slit on one side. Fairfax has his piece selling on Nordstrom but grab it fast before its gone because it’s bound to be popular this season.

It’s a bold and courageous move that many fashion trendsetters will be forced to try since it is catching on in the new year. Many can DIY this at home- just take your favorite pair of jeans or pants and cut one side for a way better price.

I wanted to try this look and see how the public would react which tests my personal style. I decided to cut a pair that I have had for awhile that are already worn and ripped to the seams which worked out pretty well. I simply cut off the side that had the most tears and then cuffed it to give it that Rita Ora look. This is how it came out:

I decided to wear this piece with a fun top to make it stand out even more. I paired the one-legged pant together with a statement heel to add some extra height and make it look extra dramatic. Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised to see how stylish it looked regardless of the stares I received from strangers. I tested this look out in my college town which has a pretty warm climate so this worked to my advantage.

While shopping at the local boutiques, I noticed the glares on my back and some were even kind enough to let me know they loved it and asked where I bought them. Their faces looked shocked when I told them I did it at home with some scissors. Overall, I'm happy I stepped out of my comfort zone because it's something I would have never worn or thought of to try. It is definitely a look for the fashion trendsetters out there who want to mix it up and try something new.

The one-legged pant will bring an elevated look to your collection if you looking to up-cycle some pants you never wear or to change your style. It's sexy and courageous but brings a sense of uniqueness to fashion which I think this piece is screaming for.
