A 70s INSPIRED ARMY

A striking pre-fall runway show where Oliver Rousteing, who has now been the Creative Director at Balmain for 12 years, shows no sign of running out of creative juices anytime soon. He has now worked in luxury fashion for several years not counting his work in jewelry. This expansive pre-fall show is the appetizer for the two main lines the first being influenced by the history of the brand and the second being an homage to Pierre Balmain. Rousteing was inspired by the archives of the house and the founder of the brand Pierre. Pierre was inspired by opera glasses, mask-like hats and bow-shaped pieces that Rousteing took inspiration from. This menswear and womenswear collection amplified themes from the early 1960s and 1970s, exaggerating the classic platforms, vest and dramatic flared pants from decades past.

The collection was inspired by revived archival designs. The use of shoulder pads was a nod to Christophe Decarnin. Using a more ornamental and structural military jacket throughout the line, repeatedly. Details included abstract silhouettes in an intricate mosaic bow and broach shape representing a post-art deco era; As well as a hint of the Futurism aesthetic.

The first look features these magnificent opera glasses with a matching headpiece. The next, an abstract dress with a striking high hemline, a statement chest piece, and a matching headband with long black gloves. Following in the glitz and glamour of the collection, the bow shaped dress was paired with a geometric crystal choker, extravagant golden lion earrings with a mouthful of diamonds, and long black gloves. It’s all very camp to me.

This collection couldn’t be complete without a red three piece suit, and our favorite 70s flared pant. Topped off with a black turtle neck, one of the most wearable looks presented this season. The look was elevated with statement earrings, a golden necklace, a belt, and a fanny pack. The expansive collection was filled with crystal accessories, futurist opera glasses, bold hats, coats, statement pieces, and a modernized take on that groovy look.
